West Texas Ranch for Christ, Blackwell, Texas
(23 miles south of I-20, Sweetwater, TX) The Project is the renovation of
a portion of a building that has housed a library and storage space.
The Project:
Renovation of portion of a building that has
housed a library and storage space. Convert two rooms into
dormitory rooms and one room into a meeting room. Also, repair two existing
dormitory rooms that recently received extensive water damage.
The former library room is finished but will
need some repairs and "sprucing up".
There are two rest rooms in this room that
each have a sink and toilet. One shower stall is in place, another will be
added.
The storage room needs complete renovation to
include insulation, wall covering, floor covering, installation of two
complete bath rooms, installation of washer and dryer, painting, etc.
The former shop room will be converted into a
meeting room with a single rest room (no shower). This will basically require
the same work as the storage room. There are five windows in this room that
must be removed.
The cover over the front porch of the
building was destroyed by a tornado and has already been replaced.
Workers needed: Need 20 - 30 people
each week. Will need some workers skilled in framing, electrical, plumbing,
heat/air, trim, painting, etc. Of course, all workers do not need to be
skilled. There will be something for everyone to do. Also needed will be cooks
to prepare meals and snacks each week. At the present time there are 6 - 8
individuals who have committed to go for both weeks. The team from Bethel
Baptist Church in Americus is considering going the first week and a team from
Harvest Baptist in Covington is considering the second week. Others will be
needed each week. Of course, anyone desiring to go for both weeks would be
welcomed.
General Information: A small team is
going out to the ranch the first week in April to complete some minor tasks,
but primarily, to draw up the renovation plans for the building and to
complete a materials list for the project. All materials will be on hand when
the first team arrives in May. Once the plans for the renovation are
completed, this information will be provided to all who commit to go in May so
that everyone will be familiar with the specific work needed to be done.
Housing will be provided at the ranch
for all persons who go. Couples will be housed together. A washer and dryer
are available for personal use. Bed linens, towels and wash cloths will be
provided.
Food will be provided and can be
prepared in the ranch's commercial kitchen. Once each team's cooks have been
identified, they can plan their own menus. Grocery lists can then be prepared
from the menus and presented to the ranch representative who will purchase the
food and have it available when the teams arrive.
Travel to the ranch: The mode of
travel will be worked out once it is known exactly who and how many will be
going. The suggestion is that travel commence on Saturday morning with arrival
at the ranch on Sunday afternoon. Overnight lodging in Shreveport, Louisiana,
is recommended for the trip out. It is requested that each week include at
least five days of work. That would mean that the return trip home would be on
Saturday and Sunday. If a team cannot be away from home for two Sundays,
leaving early afternoon Friday would allow for arrival home before too late on
Saturday with a half day of work before leaving Friday.
Expenses: The only expense for this
trip will be for meals and lodging while enroute to and from the ranch.
